Developing young pitchers requires patience and a focus on proper mechanics before velocity. Here are five drills we use at Diamond Development Center to help young arms develop safely and effectively.
1. Balance Point Hold
This drill teaches pitchers to find their balance point and hold it, developing the body control necessary for consistent delivery. Start by having the pitcher lift their leg and hold for 3-5 seconds before completing the throw.
2. Wall Drills for Arm Path
Standing sideways to a wall, pitchers practice their arm circle to ensure proper arm path. The wall prevents them from bringing the arm too far back, promoting efficient and safe mechanics.
3. Towel Drill
This classic drill uses a towel to work on extension and release point without the stress of actually throwing a ball. It's great for warming up and ingraining proper finish position.
4. Knee Drill
By throwing from one knee, pitchers isolate their upper body mechanics and arm action. This removes the lower body and allows coaches to focus specifically on arm slot and release.
5. Long Toss Program
Structured long toss builds arm strength while also working on mechanics under increasingly challenging distances. The key is gradual progression and proper recovery.
The Importance of Quality Instruction
While these drills can be practiced at home, having a qualified instructor watch and correct mechanics is invaluable. Small adjustments early prevent problems later. Our pitching coaches at Diamond Development Center work with young arms throughout the Treasure Valley.
